Electronics Today, India’s first Techno-Economic Electronics Monthly Journal, has spearheaded smart card Revolution in India since 1997, when, for the first time in the country, it organised an International Conference on Smart Card Technology and Applications in Mumbai, followed by a similar conference in Bangalore in 1998. Prior to 1997, there was hardly any smart card application in India, except SIM card in Mobile phones. SmartCards Expo, launched in 1999 has further accelerated the applications of smart card technology for diversified applications.

SmartCards Expo was later joined by RFIDIndia Expo in 2005, BiometricsIndia Expo (2007), e-Payments India Expo and Mobile Forum of India (2008). All these events are now co-located events.
India has seen a promising growth in all these technology applications during last few years. Smart card applications, in conjunction with mobile communications, biometrics, RFID and Payments technologies, are being implemented by the Central and State governments for several socio-economic projects worth trillion of rupees, such as: Driving license, Vehicle Registration, e-Passport, e-Governance projects like NREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act), RSBY (Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana), Public Distribution System (PDS), Metro Rail Projects, Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, Unique Identification Numbers, Banking and Financial applications, e-Payments, Mobile Payments, Loyalty, Medical Records, Transit, e-Ticketing, Toll Collection, Automatic Fare Collection and umpteen number of other applications.

According to IMARC Group, “India's market for smart cards is forecast to generate about US$ 1 billion in revenues by early 2015, a rise by 42 percent from 2011”. In view of current rate of growth in technology applications, these estimates appear to be on the lower side, yet are indicative of the Indian potential.
